I think I've become

Comfortably numb. I feel very insulated today against any and everything. It will all slide off me like water from a duck's back. I wish I could feel this way all the time.

Last night I got into a conversation about racism with a friend of mine. I think everybody is racist to a certain extent, and though she agreed with me, she kept insisting that she wasn't. I live in a city with an unbearable amount of racial tension. That would be Memphis, TN. I guess the level of racial tension would make sense given the history and population, I suppose. The black and white breakdown is about 50/50. But I've often thought that equal racial populations would eventually lead to improvements in racial relations. But the segregation and anomosity continues. I wonder if overall it is increasing, decreasing or staying the same.

Recently I've begun to admit that I have become more racist. I used to never believe that I was racist. I majored in sociology and I'm a bleeding heart liberal. But I've become increasingly judgemental of certain types of people. But the skin color is really not the factor, it's an attitude and mentality that I dislike. I would never judge someone based on the color of their skin. I don't even believe in the existence of scientific races. There really is no scientific definition of race. The genetic differences between two people of the same skin color can be greater than the differences between two people of different skin colors. In the genetic grand scheme of things skin color is really nothing.

It pains me to think that I have become more racist, even though I know my fundamental beliefs haven't changed. I believe that everyone is racist to begin with; it's just human nature. Intelligent people recognize that the differences between people aren't caused by the color of one's skin. Stupid people don't have the brain capacity to figure out anything except what's pushed down their throats by their stupid parents. So the endless cycle of racism continues through stupid people.

Gosh, I'm not making any sense.

I agree 100%. In my job, one is not supposed to be racist, but it is difficult not to be when you see some of the things that I do.

Not to mention that individuals who are not white, are treated better, and offered more opportunities. The government is so afraid of discrimination suits that they practice reverse discrimination against caucasians.

Whites are rarely hired for jobs over those who are a visible minority - even if they are more qualified. Employers do not want minorities to claim that they were discriminated against.

I'd like to open a business, and say "Sorry, I'm only hiring whites..." I wonder how fast the government would shut me down. It's not fair.

Like you, its not the colour of the skin that bothers me, it's the attitude. Everytime something does not go their way, they cry discrimination. "Oh, it's 'cause I'm Black/Indian/Pakistani/"

Their culture is treated higher than ours, and our common customs -like Christmas, or Santa Clause, or the Easter Bunny, etc... are being banned.

(Which our children aren't allowed to celebrate anymore in school...)

It's easy to see why a lot of people are becoming racist. A lot of people are just tired of being so polite, and bending over backwards to accomodate other cultural groups. Treat them like everyone else.

There is a line from Geaorge Orwells book Animal Farm that says: "Everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others..."

I think that describes today's society.

(Sorry, I guess I got carried away - I just kinda took over your little comment page... )

Awesome Blog though!

Well of course we know genetically that all the race differences ae negligible. But because historically we separated each other in this country according to race, different cultures have developed according to racial lines. So black culture and black people tend to go hand in hand. You may dislike black culture or white culture but not specifically black people or white people yet still judge a black person because 95% of the time they exhibit all the traits of their culture. when black people call white people racist, a lot of the time it is just a culture clash in modern times. The two cultures have sprouted different values. If you are dim, you confuse the culture with the race because they're so closely correlated. So if I say I don't like black culture but am indifferent to race because I know that it has no scientific bearing on behavior, does it mean I am racist?

This summer, I'll be taking a class called Race, Racism and Philosophy. Should be good.

Afffirmative Action - is it a necessary evil or just a bunch of crap? I don't really have an opinion. Is it bad to judge someone based on their cultural behavior as opposed to their racial identity? I think it's one in the same. I have a buzz right now, so I'm not in the best position to respond to the remarks. But does separating the cultural from the actual racial identity or what have you accomplish anything substantial? I just wonder, are any improvements being made in racial relations anywhere? I have a sneaking suspicsion, nope.

Very interesting post. While I don't consider myself racist, I am somewhat biased. You have given me a lot to think about.
